How many commercial fridges do I need?

A commercial fridge is commonly used in restaurants and other food-related businesses. The most crucial purpose of a commercial fridge is to keep refrigerated food displays and other perishables cold. A commercial fridge is essential for keeping food fresh and preventing it from going bad. It also helps store perishable items like produce, meat, and dairy products.

Decisions need to be made on the amount of commercial fridge storage versus commercial freezer storage you need from the early days. This would depend on the type of food service operation that you are running, the nature of the items to be placed under refrigeration, and your budget and storage constraints. Also, the frequency of product delivery is all part of a complicated equation that results in effective and efficient refrigeration storage.

If you are planning to store perishable items, the commercial fridge must be capable of maintaining interior temperatures at or below 5 Celsius, while a commercial freezer must maintain the temperature at -18 Celsius or below. The drink fridges do not need this requirement and can run between 2 – 8 Celsius as the sole purpose of the drink fridge is to keep the drinks cold.

A commercial freezer is generally equipped with a larger compressor and fans to provide higher velocity air movement than a commercial fridge.

Commercial fridge or commercial freezer capacity is usually stated as “net capacity” in cubic metres or litres. This means that the available interior space for refrigerated storage is the net cubic metres or litres. However, operators should be aware that interior space is not totally available for storage because of evaporators, lights, tray slides and shelves. The actual net capacity may be somewhat less.

Typical interior capacity for various sized units is as follows,

Single door - 0.6 cubic metres

Double Door - 1.4 cubic metres

Triple Door - 2.0 cubic metres.
